What was the biggest problem for HR or training managers regarding with employee training in the year 2016?

As someone who built a training product in 2016, I spent months figuring out what people wanted. Training managers typically gave business-focused responses, but the discussions turned emotional with most employees I interviewed. Here are some of the problems they brought up

As someone who built a training product in 2016, I spent months figuring out what people wanted. Training managers typically gave business-focused responses, but the discussions turned emotional with most employees I interviewed. Here are some of the problems they brought up:

  • Relevance: The minute it’s not relevant to their job, employees shut down. Even if the general concept is relevant, irrelevant examples can alienate the crowd.
  • Difficulty: Intro-level training for experienced employees is gut-wrenching. Advanced training for beginners loses the audience. Employees want training that matches their specific level of experience and competence.
  • Commitment: Being forced to spend time in training on a topic that will never be discussed again is seen as a waste of time. If the material isn’t woven into their job in an interesting and meaningful way, employees will become frustrated.

Designing training that addresses the points above is hard, but it’s very possible…and in fact I’ve seen it done.
