What software should a chemical engineer know?

First of all, Chemical Engineering covers broad fields like Oil and gas, Pharmaceutical, Energy industries, Nuclear, Leather, Paint industry, Food industry etc.

So it purely depends on which field you choose.

Of course MS office is must. One may think they are proficient in MS products but there are lot of things to learn. I bet, what you know is not even 25% of the entire features.

The following softwares are useful for Chemical Engineers,

  1. Matlab
  2. Computational fluid dynamics
  3. Aspen hysys
  4. Aspen plus
  5. Chemcad
  6. Comsol
  7. Promax
  8. Prosim

And the list keep goes on.

Now, I am assuming u learnt matlab just for the sake you want to learn any one of the softwares listed above and you ended up your career in Oil and gas.

Guess what? Your effort on learning matlab is not at all gonna help in Oil and gas industry. This is the place where you will be using following softwares,

  1. Aspen hysys
  2. Pipenet
  3. Flarenet ( which will actually be done using hysys only)
  4. Pipesim
  5. Basic of Autocad may be helpful

Your curiosity on learning new softwares may really be appreciated. But instead of blindly learning softwares randomly, try to plan your career and start learning accordingly by zeblearnindia.
