Is payroll a good career ladder?

The problem with payroll is that the departments don't tend to be huge so moving up can be slow but at a bureau you have a lot of space to move.

I have found it to be pretty good. I started off doing payroll and some accounts work for a hotel. Went from there to a hotel chain as a junior payroll assistant but my career took off when I moved to a large bureau called ADP.

The problem with payroll is that the departments don't tend to be huge so moving up can be slow but at a bureau you have a lot of space to move. 12 years after moving to the bureau, I am currently a senior payroll implementation consultant, earning a very good wage with good progression prospects so it's been a good career so far.
