I am struggling to look for a HR job because I have no experience. Do you think I should do a short course in HR to learn all the things I didn’t learn at Uni such as writing job descriptions, payroll etc?

As for further qualifications, it’s a risk going to the trouble for them. I got a “European Computer Driver’s Licence Course” under my belt to help with my employability, and it basically made no difference to my job applications. I was still getting endless rejections. I have had further HR qualifications since, but only after getting into the job sector, and getting an employer to pay for them.

The way I got into HR was via temp working, having very limited admin experience prior. If you lack work experience, temp agencies are handy as a means to build up small amounts of experience in lots of sectors, hear and there. I worked in construction, catering, bar work, and warehousing and eventually HR via two different agencies.

Once you are temping in a sector you like the look of, you already have your foot in the door. This is because if a company is hiring out temps, the chances are they are short staffed and are actively looking for someone to fill the gap already. By doing the role, you may well have already demonstrated to them your own competency for the work, so its an easy sell if you apply to work for them full time. Simply keep an eye out for if the place has any job openings, and take the initiative to apply.
