What are some tips for HR leaders to ensure that everyone has a wonderful time at workplace events?

I am not an HR person by trade but more of an executive leader. The events that I either organized or attended that left a lasting impression had some common elements:

  1. They were fun. If they were activity-based, they usually had a couple of very different activities to choose from so that one group didn’t feel left out, such as fishing and shopping.
  2. They started on time and were rarely longer than 2 hours. People are busy.
  3. They involved partners/spouses and sometimes kids. More than just about people I work with, which turns it into a work event.
  4. If they were significant events, I had key people giving me input along the way who were the “guests,” so to speak.
  5. If it was more of a work event, some recognition goes a long way.
  6. Go offsite to unique places that would do something special for us. It doesn’t have to be expensive, a dive bar or specialty bakery. Unique means I appreciate you.
  7. Outside speakers with a unique perspective could be something unrelated to work.

Probably a mix of ideas, but workplace events ultimately help you define your culture. Better to not have an event than one that is counter to the culture you have or are trying to create.
