The outcome of good onboarding are more productive employees who are able to ‘hit the ground running’ and this can only be done if the new hire understands their individual and teammates roles and responsibilities, how the work that they do fits in with the rest of the organisation and how they contribute to the purpose, vision and mission of the organisation. This day one function is a combination of HR and Line working to explain in words or through videos and other tools.

There is also the formal and informal rules of how we do things around here : the corporate culture.

On a side note : One of the most important I’ve found in Asia is how to make and submit expense claims and how not to miss the claim deadline ! The other is the dress code to help the new employee fit in and be aware of Casual Fridays, for example.

The HR would also assign a buddy to show the newbie around on his first day at work.

In some organisations there is regular check ins being done at the end of the first day, first week and end of 3 months. This helps the new hire get a sense of reassurance and more importantly, the company can provide support, if required. With phone apps, this regular check in can be done quite easily. Without such a tool, regular check ins are difficult if the employee size is large.

Often the first day, first week support that a Manager, HR or other colleagues provide to the newbie will help the person answer the question and get a sense of ‘do I belong here?’

In short, a good onboarding process will help get the new hire get oriented quickly, excited about his purpose within the company and hopefully engage and retain her.
