What is the difference between an HR certification and an HR degree? Which is more beneficial for a career in human resources?

After working in Human Resources I became a member of the Society for Human Resources. The professional organization offered certification program courses and testing.

I will answer based upon my experience. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management/Human Resources. It took approximately four years of study and coursework before receiving my educational degree from my university and the Tennessee State Board of Regents. When I applied for management level positions with organizations in the human resource field, they required a BS degree in business or Human Resources management. Some preferred a Masters. After working in Human Resources I became a member of the Society for Human Resources. The professional organization offered certification program courses and testing. I studied after work for a year and successfully earned my PHR certification. As I advanced in my career I studied for another year and successfully received my SPHR certification. During my twenty five year career in Human Resources I progressed from HR Specialist to Vice President of Human Resources. Most executive HR positions require minimum BS and prefer MS degrees. Many organizations prefer professional certifications such as PHR (Professional of Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional of Human Resources). In my opinion the college degree and certification credentials aided me in my career path. I really did learn a great deal through both certification processes.
