Why does the HR get more salary?

What is the work of HR?

Answer: Hire and fire

Probably 80% of the people will say the above mentioned answer. But it’s not their fault. We can only assume about the things which we haven’t experienced.

Let me tell you a real life story:

  • Some days back, me and my team decided to hire some interns for Content writing internship.
  • We got over 350 applicants from various domains.
  • We planned to hire only 10–20 interns, but after receiving such large no. of applications, we decided that we will hire all the talented people even if the number goes beyond 50.
  • When you are building a startup, you have to do each kind of task and so we were doing. We took the work of HR in our hands.
  • So now the problem was, how to search the real talent and workability in those 350+ applications.
  • We decided to give them a simple assignment for the same.
  • Since the applicants were from various domains we gave them topic of assignment related to their field and asked them to write an article of not more than 300 words.
  • It is a really hectic job to read so many articles and then evaluating them
  • But to our relief, we got only 168 articles. Not to mention(We got 100+ questions related to that assignment and internship and we answered them)
  • So you see, most of the people run away when they need to put efforts. People desire money, but they don’t work for it.
  • And the candidates who did not sent assignment were actually over-qualified for the job.
  • I learnt a new thing, when you are Over-Qualified, you become un-employable.
  • We started evaluating the assignments, nearly 50% of them were copied from different websites. We did a plagiarism detection and even found 100% plagiarism.
  • And to my surprise the people who submitted copied assignments were also over-qualified.
  • So now we were left with some 50–60 people, who needed mentorship to polish their talent. These people were the most hardworking and were ready to learn.
  • Yes, I’m talking about students. These college students did much more better job than others.
  • And now we are working with a group of highly motivated, innovative individuals who are filled with bubbly energy.
