How should a person prepare for an interview with a member of the human resource department?

Review the company history and if the company has financials on their site as well as products the company is working on. I would also suggest googling the company. The more knowledge the better.

Preparing for an interview can be overwhelming and somewhat daunting at times.

Preparation to meet with HR should be handled in the same fashion as meeting with your potential manager. HR's job in the interview is to:

1) Share the culture mission and values of the organization and ensure that the culture of the organization matches the interviewees passions and values. I would recommend researching the company's mission and values and ask questions relates to those values in your interview. For example:

- I see that this organization does a lot of humanitarian work. How are those programs organized?

2) HR is also there to provide an understand of benefits and a day in the life. So I would recommend coming prepared with questions related to benefits.

- Do you offer a volunteer day? When does medical coverage begin?

3) HR is also responsible for reviewing accuracy and reasons for leaving on resumes as well as a deeper dive into the skills gained with those roles. One thing that I can't stress enough here is to make sure you bring 5-7 resumes. Don't rely on the interviewer to have a copy printed out. Also, prior to the interview make sure that you review your resume and have your reasons for leaving as well as skills and experience you gained ready to answer.

Some other areas that I would recommend as you prepare for your interview with HR.

- Find them on LinkedIN, review them along with anyone else you are meeting with to see if you yourself have any commonalities that could be shared in the interview

- Review the company history and if the company has financials on their site as well as products the company is working on. I would also suggest googling the company. The more knowledge the better.

- I would also suggest rehearsing or even video taping yourself answering interview questions to make sure you are prepared. Some examples of questions you should be prepared to answer:

1) Why are you looking to join our company?

2) Why you? Why should we hire you?

3) Why did you leave your last job?

4) What is something that your previous boss would say that you could improve on?

5) What constructive feedback were you given recently? What did you do specifically to address the feedback?

My advice is preparing is key. Research as much as you can prior to the interview.

Be early. Come dressed for the job. Bring several copies of your resume. Bring a notebook to take notes and 2 pens (just in case).

At the end of the interview. ASK FOR THE JOB! Express your interest and ask when you think next steps will take place. This will help you get an idea to set your expectations.

And send Thank you notes to people you met with. E-mailed thank you notes are acceptable or snail mail is fine too.
