How should I answer this interview question in PSU interviews: "Why PSU?"

While it may be true that some private sector companies pay higher than PSUs, the non-monetary benefits offered by PSUs like a quarter accommodation in a large and peaceful township, more leaves, Officer Clubs etc.., far outweigh a slightly higher monetary benefits of pvt sector.

You should go well prepared for any interview if you want to get selected. A casual approach to interviews will not help. Many good candidates are rejected because they don’t handle interviewers & their questions well. Sometimes they blurt out something they should not say.

I would suggest you to take professional help in case you are feeling underprepared for PSU interviews after GATE. I joined interview guidance program conducted by MadeEasy wherein they not only focused on Current Affairs, HR and technical areas but also on improving the overall personality for the interview. I gave 3-4 mock interviews and was given constructive feedback from the panel.

Based on my interviews, I can give you some pointers about answering this question of “Why PSUs ?”

  • PSUs play a very important role in building our nation. Private sector is more concerned about profits whereas PSUs are more concerned about nation building.
  • Projects & Operations of PSUs are typically of a very large scale. So, working with a PSU will expose you to such large projects. Also by working with a PSU, you will be directly contributing to the nation building activity.
  • Public Sector Companies offer a good balance between professional and personal life.
  • While it may be true that some private sector companies pay higher than PSUs, the non-monetary benefits offered by PSUs like a quarter accommodation in a large and peaceful township, more leaves, Officer Clubs etc.., far outweigh a slightly higher monetary benefits of pvt sector.
  • Job Security is another important factor while choosing a career in Public Sector.
  • PSU employees enjoy a much higher social status than Private Sector employees in our country.
  • For HR part, try to read about the company, job profile, HR policy, Bond agreement before going for interview. Prepare good answers to few HR questions like Why this organisation, strengths and weakness, why should we hire you etc.
