Is it true that we can’t take hr as a major specialization in Great Lakes Chennai for the PGDM programme?

But despite all the issues, the bright spot was that the faculty they got to teach them the courses were real good with a lot of substance. So, on the learning front, I don’t think they were let down by the institute.

Back in my batch in 2014, there were a few students who did major in HR and a few of my batchmates are working in HR dept of a few reputed companies as well. However, that was a not a very rosy scene for them.

The first issue they faced was that the number of students they needed to major in HR was too low (less than 10 if I remember right). So, they found it tough to convince the management to let them major in HR. And then they had to convince people to take up HR courses (a course requires a minimum of 15 students and to major you require 8 elective courses). A few courses were pretty popular even among the Non HR students, but then a few courses were purely HR and it was a tough time. Ultimately, since the college didn’t have a lot of HR placements earlier, it became tough to bring in HR jobs all of a sudden. A few students were lucky enough to get one in college. A few students tried hard and got it outside. At the end of the day, I guess they were stubborn and got their wish fulfilled.

But despite all the issues, the bright spot was that the faculty they got to teach them the courses were real good with a lot of substance. So, on the learning front, I don’t think they were let down by the institute.

So, here is my take - the choice of majoring in HR would depend completely on your batchmates. If you have more than 10 people interested, I would say it wouldn’t be an issue. But, if you are very sure that you want to major only in HR and have a really giant group of HR candidates, I would suggest you to consider the few B Schools that have really got their mark in HR.
