What should I say when an interviewer asks why I chose to pursue a job different and irrelevant to the field I studied?

After acquiring knowledge of various languages, I went on for some interviews. But on the very first interview itself, one question made me to think about was why did you change your field?

This type of question is the reason I got my job in the first place!

I did my engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications, and because of the massive placements we had in the field *coughs*, I shifted my domain to IT(as many people have).

After acquiring knowledge of various languages, I went on for some interviews. But on the very first interview itself, one question made me to think about was why did you change your field?

After almost 10/12 interviews, I had mastered to answer it. I gave the answer in my interviews as follows:

Int: Why did you opt for IT when you have done EXTC?

Me: The education system Sir.

Int: What?

Me: Yes Sir, the education system.

Int: Can you please explain your statement?

Me: Okay Sir. First of all, after giving the SSC, I had only three options: Arts, Commerce and Science. Just because I didn’t like History and Economics, I didn’t want to commence Commerce and though I was good at art, I did not think that I could pursue a career in it. So I opted for Science. In that too, I didn’t like Biology, so just because of that, I opted for a vocational subject in Electronics. This was the problem, right here. I could’ve opted for IT, but because I had no knowledge of it, I didn’t take it up. The SSC syllabus doesn’t include a coding language as a curriculum like others do. Had I had the knowledge about a coding language as basic as C, I would’ve surely opted for IT only! Now after learning things about coding, I consider coding as a passion and not as a way of earning.

Int: Okay.

The Interviewer asked a series of questions to check my knowledge which I answered comfortably. After clearing this round I got a call to discuss the Salary!
