What should one say when asked by an interviewer, "Why did you choose mechanical engineering"?

In my mind infinite questions occur. I try to find those answers and whatever I search and find the content which leads to the department of mechanical engineering.

The first important thing is that who asked this question ? The HR or the technical Guy.

Basically if you are from mechanical dept and when you go for interviews there will be the technical as well as HR round. Sometimes they both conduct it simultaneously.

I have faced this question in 2 interviews. At first the technical guy asked me why mechanical ??.. I was quite shocked like what to say. Then I relaxed and took bit of time and then said “ Sir, I m someone who likes to observe things . I always try to find the reason behind the existence of things which ultimately forced me to take mechanical engineering “.

He asked me to explain.

Then I said, Sir when I look around , I find things which is made up of different materials and different states n all. What could be the process to make it. Why only this material ?? Why not some other material ?? What could be the purpose of the shape and styles.?

Even though I m not interested in automobiles that much. I took mechanical because by the end of my 12th class I was sure that I have to be in this dept.

He was happy to listen this answer from me. And then Asked me about innovative things in future .

So, be realistic about your answer. Let him know that you took a right decision taking mechanical. Whatever you feel like and gained from mech just use that as a tool to answer this question.

2. The same question was asked by the HR in different way that why I didn't go for computer engineering.

As far as I know, the question concerned regarding your decision making.

I told him that sir when I was in school, I didn't find the languages interesting at all…i learned HTML and it wasn't interesting at all. Even when I was in first year the subject of programming language is not much of my kind. I opted mechanical dept because this is where my interest lies.
